The Very Brief History of Temporary Tattoos

Many people are familiar with the history of tattooing and how it spans thousands of years and across multiple cultures, but when did temporary tattoos become a thing?

In this blog post, we’ll explore when temporary tattoos became popular, why they continue to be a great alternative to actual tattoos, and how you can easily get temporarily tatted!

The When

The early history of temporary tattoos is vague, but most attribute their origins to the iconic Cracker Jacks® product, which began featuring a "prize in every box" in 1912. It’s believed these original prizes were temporary tattoos, and by the 1950’s, they sold sheets of these designs for 1 cent each.

As time went on, temporary tattoos attained more mainstream popularity via baseball cards, other trading cards, and with the development of “scratch and sniff” tattoos.

By the mid 1980’s, and with eagerness from Hollywood to create a tattoo that was only temporary, an inventor named Keith R. Relyea, received a patent for his method of printing images on a translucent film that could then be transferred to the body.

The Why

Temporary tattoos have come a long way since being the featured prize in a Cracker Jacks® box. Tattooists and other artists have worked with temporary tattoo companies to produce products similar to the real thing. Doing so only increased the popularity of these temporary designs.

With their affordable price tag, temporary status, and ability to look like the real thing, it's easy to see why temporary tattoos are so popular.

Why You Should Get Inked...Temporarily

Temporary tattoos are an excellent alternative to getting permanently inked. They’re budget-friendly, pain free, and the best perk is, yes, they’re only temporary! Below we outline some of the pros of getting a temporary tattoo.

All Ages Approved

Temporary tattoos are versatile enough to satisfy all age ranges and styles. Many of our tattoo collections are artistic pieces designed to emulate real tattoos from our black and grey series to our mini black designs that are popular amongst the minimalist tattoo crowd. We also offer fun and light-hearted options like our pettoos animal line and our poopie emoji stickers.

Fad Designs

When you get permanently inked, you’re stuck with that piece forever (unless, of course, you go this route). With temporary tattoos, you’re not at the mercy of passing fads since the tattoos only last about one week!

Versatility

Temporary tattoos not only make great stocking stuffers and party favors, but they’re also great for arts and crafts, offering hours of creativity and fun.

Cost

Real tattoos are expensive and will set you back hundreds of dollars. Most temporary tattoos start at at $1 per design. We even have a great “mix & match” offer– 5 designs for $5!

Temporary tattoos allow you to decorate your skin differently every week without the consequences of being stuck with artwork you no longer like. Explore our store today!

How to Apply Your Temporary Tattoos

Tatt Me Temporary tattoos are fast and easy to apply; all you need is water. Your skin should be clean, dry and free of lotion, oils and makeup. First, remove the clear, protective top sheet. Then, press the tattoo firmly onto your skin with the design facing down. Hold a wet cloth against the back of the tattoo, press down and make sure to wet it thoroughly. Wait 30 seconds and slowly peel off the paper backing. Gently rinse the image with water for the best results and allow the temporary tattoo to dry before touching or covering with clothing. Every Tatt Me Temporary Tattoo has these application instructions printed on the back.
