Meaning Behind Tattoos

Temporary tattoos allow you to decorate your body in cool designs without the permanence of the real thing, but do you ever wonder what some of these tattoo designs symbolize? Read on to learn more!

Sea Turtle | View Design Here

Turtles are one of the oldest creatures on earth. The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, known as “Honu,” symbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. Turtles can show up as a person’s guardian spirit, known as “Aumakua.” When lost, turtles are excellent navigators and often find their way home. Legend states that a green sea turtle guided the first Polynesian settlers to the islands. In historic days, only the rich were allowed to consume turtles as food. In modern times, sea turtles are protected by the Endangered Species act and there are severe penalties just for giving them stinkeye. [Source: OluKai]

Hibiscus Flower | View Design Here

The Hibiscus is a popular flower representing delicate beauty and sunshine. It is known that women who wear the flower behind the right ear are single and the left ear represents a woman who is romantically attached. The Bird of Paradise is another exotic flower seen throughout Hawaii. The Hawaiian name for the flower means, “Little Globe,” and represents joy and magnificence. Orchids are indigenous to Hawaiian landscapes and are symbolic toward refinement and beauty. [Source: OluKai

Mandala | View Design Here

The mandala, while in design is dominated by squares or triangles, has a concentric structure and actually translates to “circle” in Sanskrit. These symbols offer visual elements that balance and represent harmony and unity. The mandala is extremely versatile and can carry a number of meanings that are limited only by the creator and the observer. The overall goal of a mandala is to be a tool on one’s spiritual journey. Cherry Blossom | View Design Here

The significance of the cherry blossom tree in Japanese culture goes back hundreds of years. In their country, the cherry blossom represents the fragility and the beauty of life. It’s a reminder that life is almost overwhelmingly beautiful but that it is also tragically short. When the cherry blossom trees bloom for a short time each year in brilliant force, they serve as a visual reminder of how precious and how precarious life is. [Source: Huffington Post

Koi Fish | View Design Here

Koi is a Japanese word for Carp. Japanese people have, for years, used Koi fish tattoo designs as a cultural symbol for overcoming adversity. Stories are told of how they climb waterfalls that have strong currents. It is said Koi was determined to reach the top of the waterfall so it persevered and succeeded. The Very Brief History of Temporary Tattoos

Many people are familiar with the history of tattooing and how it spans thousands of years and across multiple cultures, but when did temporary tattoos become a thing?

In this blog post, we’ll explore when temporary tattoos became popular, why they continue to be a great alternative to actual tattoos, and how you can easily get temporarily tatted!

The When

The early history of temporary tattoos is vague, but most attribute their origins to the iconic Cracker Jacks® product, which began featuring a "prize in every box" in 1912. It’s believed these original prizes were temporary tattoos, and by the 1950’s, they sold sheets of these designs for 1 cent each.

As time went on, temporary tattoos attained more mainstream popularity via baseball cards, other trading cards, and with the development of “scratch and sniff” tattoos.

By the mid 1980’s, and with eagerness from Hollywood to create a tattoo that was only temporary, an inventor named Keith R. Relyea, received a patent for his method of printing images on a translucent film that could then be transferred to the body.

The Why

Temporary tattoos have come a long way since being the featured prize in a Cracker Jacks® box. Tattooists and other artists have worked with temporary tattoo companies to produce products similar to the real thing. Doing so only increased the popularity of these temporary designs.

With their affordable price tag, temporary status, and ability to look like the real thing, it's easy to see why temporary tattoos are so popular.

The How

How can you get yourself some fashionable temporary tattoos? Well, you came to the right place! We have over 300 designs and free shipping within the U.S. Whether you’re a fan of skulls, under the sea creatures, or realistic watercolor designs, we’ve got your covered. Why You Should Get Inked...Temporarily

Temporary tattoos are an excellent alternative to getting permanently inked. They’re budget-friendly, pain free, and the best perk is, yes, they’re only temporary! Below we outline some of the pros of getting a temporary tattoo.

All Ages Approved

Temporary tattoos are versatile enough to satisfy all age ranges and styles. Many of our tattoo collections are artistic pieces designed to emulate real tattoos from our black and grey series to our mini black designs that are popular amongst the minimalist tattoo crowd. We also offer fun and light-hearted options like our pettoos animal line and our poopie emoji stickers.

Fad Designs

When you get permanently inked, you’re stuck with that piece forever (unless, of course, you go this route). With temporary tattoos, you’re not at the mercy of passing fads since the tattoos only last about one week!

Versatility

Temporary tattoos not only make great stocking stuffers and party favors, but they’re also great for arts and crafts, offering hours of creativity and fun.

Cost

Real tattoos are expensive and will set you back hundreds of dollars. Most temporary tattoos start at at $1 per design. We even have a great “mix & match” offer– 5 designs for $5!

Temporary tattoos allow you to decorate your skin differently every week without the consequences of being stuck with artwork you no longer like. Explore our store today!
